Dangote Cement Plc has unveiled a new Internship Program designed to provide practical experience for engineering students from Nigerian tertiary institutions. This initiative, part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), offers students a one-year, fully funded internship opportunity.
The launch event, held at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) in Lagos, marks the beginning of this significant program. A total of 20 students, with 10 selected from Lagos and 10 from Kano States, will be involved. These students will gain hands-on experience at various building project sites, under the guidance of Dangote Cement’s technical officers.
Mr. Tunde Mabogunje, Dangote Cement’s Regional Sales Director for Lagos/Ogun, highlighted the importance of the scheme, stating, “This internship is a key component of our CSR efforts and reflects our commitment to developing the next generation of engineers. By offering practical training, we aim to enhance students’ skills and prepare them for successful careers in the industry.”
The program will focus on the practical application of cement, with particular emphasis on Dangote Cement products and industry standards set by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON). Students will be involved in live projects, applying their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. This approach addresses the current gap in vocational and technical skills within Nigeria’s building sector and aims to equip students to meet industry demands effectively.
Dr. (Engr.) Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, Rector of YABATECH, praised Dangote Cement for its innovative approach and noted that the program would significantly enhance students’ practical skills and professional readiness. The Rector also expressed enthusiasm for further collaborations with Dangote Cement, underscoring the college’s openness to additional partnerships that support student development.
Funmi Sanni, National Sales Director at Dangote Cement, emphasized the company’s dedication to quality and excellence, stating, “This program aligns with our commitment to improving educational and practical standards. Investing in initiatives like this benefits not only the students but also elevates the entire industry.”
Dangote Cement’s ongoing efforts in vocational training, including the recruitment and development of graduates for its plants and refineries, underscore its commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s industrial capabilities. This new internship program represents a significant step toward bridging the gap between academic learning and practical experience for Nigerian engineering students, supporting their professional growth and contributing to the advancement of Nigeria’s building sector.
