In a recent announcement, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has revealed its plans to initiate the production of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) and JetA1 (aviation fuel) in January 2024. The refinery, valued at $20 billion and inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2023, has faced delays in its commencement dates, with the latest setback attributed to a shortage in crude oil supply.
The facility, boasting a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, aims to produce a range of refined petroleum products, including AGO, PMS, Jet A1, and Dual Purpose Kerosene. Despite the initial anticipation of commencing operations in October of the current year, the refinery is now contingent on a minimum of six million barrels of crude oil to kick-start full-scale production.
Last week, the refinery received one million barrels of crude oil, but the remaining five million barrels necessary for production are expected to arrive in five installments. These installments will be provided by the Nigerian Petroleum Company Limited and ExxonMobil in the coming weeks.

The delay in crude oil supply has raised concerns, as expressed by Gbenga Komolafe, the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. He highlighted the broader issue of domestic refineries, including the Dangote Refinery, struggling to secure sufficient crude oil supply despite the country’s substantial reserves.
It is worth noting that this delay in petrol production commencement underscores the complex challenges faced by the refining industry, even with the presence of significant investments and modern infrastructure.
