The long-standing controversy surrounding Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption may finally be resolved, thanks to the newly inaugurated Dangote Refinery. Aliko Dangote, owner of the $20 billion facility, has announced that his refinery will provide accurate data on the country’s actual petrol usage. This development is expected to address the discrepancies and confusion that have plagued the sector for years.
For a long time, conflicting reports have made it difficult to determine the true volume of petrol consumed daily in Nigeria. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has frequently been criticized for its official figures, with prominent figures like former Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Hammed Ali, and ex-Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai, disputing the claim that Nigeria consumes 66 million litres of petrol daily. Allegations of round-tripping and fuel smuggling have further complicated the issue.

Speaking at a recent conference in Lagos, Dangote emphasized that his refinery would bring much-needed transparency to Nigeria’s fuel consumption data. According to him, the refinery’s advanced tracking systems will monitor every truck and ship transporting fuel, ensuring that the true consumption figures are accurately recorded. This will help expose practices where fuel is documented but never actually enters the country, a problem that has contributed to the ongoing controversy.

The refinery is set to enter the market as soon as final agreements with the NNPCL are completed. This move is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria’s fuel supply, particularly in light of the refinery’s capability to produce high-quality petrol that meets global standards. Dangote assured Nigerians that the petrol produced at his refinery would be of top-notch quality, matching that of any country in the world. This is a welcome development for a nation that has struggled with substandard fuel imports, which have caused damage to vehicle engines and other machinery.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has faced severe energy challenges, with its state-owned refineries remaining non-operational for years. This has left the country heavily reliant on imported refined petroleum products, a situation that has only worsened since the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023. The resulting tripling of petrol prices, from around ₦200 per litre to about ₦800 per litre, has placed a significant burden on Nigerian citizens, many of whom rely on petrol to power their vehicles and generators due to the country’s unreliable electricity supply.
The Dangote Refinery is poised to be a game-changer for Nigeria’s economy. By providing a steady supply of high-quality petrol, the refinery could help stabilize fuel prices, reduce the country’s dependence on imports, and curtail illegal activities in the fuel sector. Moreover, with accurate data on petrol consumption, Nigerian policymakers will be better equipped to make informed decisions regarding energy policies, fuel subsidies, and import quotas.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with its energy challenges, the Dangote Refinery offers a promising solution. It not only aims to meet the country’s fuel needs but also brings transparency and efficiency to a critical sector of the economy. The success of this project could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s future, potentially setting a new standard for the energy industry across Africa. With operations at the refinery set to commence soon, Nigerians are on the brink of witnessing a significant transformation in their energy sector, one that could shape the nation’s trajectory for years to come.
