Dangote’s Petrol to Arrive at Stations in 48 Hours, Promising Quality Boost

Aliko Dangote, the owner of the recently inaugurated Dangote Refinery, has announced that petrol from his facility could reach filling stations within the next 48 hours, pending final arrangements with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Dangote emphasized that the pricing and distribution of the petrol are under the purview of the Federal Executive Council, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He assured that once the final details are settled, the new petrol supply could be available immediately. “It’s a celebration day for Nigerians,” Dangote stated, highlighting that the petrol will meet global standards and enhance vehicle performance by reducing engine issues.

The Dangote Refinery, located in Lagos, commenced operations in December with an initial capacity of 350,000 barrels per day. The facility aims to reach its full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day by year-end. Alongside petrol, the refinery has been supplying diesel and aviation fuel to local markets.

Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, has struggled with energy supply issues, relying heavily on imported refined products due to non-operational state-owned refineries. Fuel prices have surged significantly since the removal of subsidies in May 2023, from approximately ₦200 per litre to around ₦800 per litre. This increase has exacerbated the challenges faced by Nigerians, who rely on petrol for transportation and power generation amid ongoing electricity supply problems.

The introduction of Dangote’s petrol is anticipated to provide some relief to the country’s energy sector, potentially stabilizing fuel prices and improving availability.
