Tragedy struck Niger State as the death toll from a devastating petrol tanker explosion at Dikko Junction surged to 86, with an additional 55 individuals injured and receiving treatment. The incident, which occurred on Saturday morning, involved a speeding fuel tanker that crashed at Dikko Junction, a critical point between Niger and Kaduna states.
According to Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the aftermath of the explosion necessitated a mass burial conducted between 5 pm and midnight the same day. “A total of 86 persons have been confirmed dead, with 80 laid to rest in a mass grave at Dikko Primary Healthcare Centre, while five were buried by their families within the town,” stated Baba-Arah. He further added that one additional casualty succumbed to injuries at the Dikko Primary Healthcare Centre.

The tragic incident unfolded as the fuel tanker overturned, spilling its contents onto the road. Despite the inherent danger, some residents attempted to collect the spilled fuel, leading to a catastrophic explosion that claimed the lives of both fuel gatherers and rescuers.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State, visibly moved by the devastation, visited the scene and promptly issued directives to prevent future incidents. “No vehicle from the Maje axis will be permitted to cross the Dikko Bridge,” Governor Bago declared during his inspection. He emphasized that vehicles must use the underpass and execute proper U-turns, condemning the recklessness that contributed to the disaster.
In response to the emergency, the governor commended the efforts of NSEMA, the Fire Service, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and local transport unions for their swift response and ongoing support. Governor Bago also announced the redeployment of doctors from Minna hospitals to reinforce medical teams treating the injured at Suleja General Hospital.
As investigations into the incident continue, the Niger State government remains focused on ensuring public safety and preventing future tragedies on its roads.
