Deputy Senate President Launches Scholarship Programme for 300 Students

In a bid to boost education and human capital development across Nigeria, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, has launched a scholarship programme aimed at supporting 300 students in various fields of study.

The initiative, under the Barau Jibrin Foundation, will fully sponsor selected students to pursue diploma and certificate programmes in disciplines such as Artificial Intelligence, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, and other emerging areas in top Nigerian universities.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the programme, Senator Jibrin emphasized the critical need for a collective approach to improving Nigeria’s educational system. According to him, the responsibility of raising the standard of education should not rest solely on the government.

“To boost educational standards in this country, everyone must participate from the government to religious bodies, individuals, and even the ordinary citizen. That is why this initiative was created: to encourage collective action in shaping the future of our youth,” he said.

Senator Jibrin also noted that the foundation had previously sent Nigerian students abroad to study advanced courses in artificial intelligence and related fields. “The knowledge they acquire is meant to be brought back home to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development,” he added.

The screening and interview process for the scholarship took place at Bayero University, where a panel of experts was tasked with ensuring a fair and transparent selection process. Senator Jibrin urged the panel to prioritize merit and transparency in choosing the beneficiaries.

Commending the programme, the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Professor Sagir Abbas, described the scholarship as a noble gesture with the potential to drive national progress.

“This is a testament to the foundation’s unwavering commitment to promoting higher education and human capital development in Nigeria,” he stated.

The students will study at prestigious institutions such as the University of Ife, University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, and Bayero University.

This initiative marks another step toward bridging the educational gap and empowering young Nigerians with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy.
