DSS Officers Take Over SERAP Office in Abuja, Group Calls It Unlawful

On September 9, 2024, officers from the Department of State Services (DSS) took control of the Abuja office of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), an action the organization has described as an “unlawful occupation.”

SERAP made this known in a statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that DSS operatives arrived at their premises and requested a meeting with the organization’s directors. The human rights group expressed concern over what they called harassment and urged President Bola Tinubu to take immediate action.

“President Tinubu must immediately direct the DSS to end the harassment, intimidation, and attack on the rights of Nigerians,” the organization demanded.

The incident comes just 24 hours after SERAP publicly called on the President to use his influence to instruct the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to reverse what they deemed an illegal and unconstitutional increase in the pump price of petrol across its outlets.

The DSS has defended its presence at the office, asserting that their actions were lawful and should not be viewed as harassment. This follows a series of incidents involving the agency, including the release of labor union leader Joe Ajaero’s passport after an earlier seizure.

SERAP has continuously called for accountability and transparency in governance, and this latest development has raised concerns among human rights advocates and civil society organizations about the increasing pressure on civic organizations under the current administration.
