In the wake of the recent military coup in the Republic of Niger, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken a strong stance, demanding the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum and calling for an immediate return to constitutional order in the country.
The coup, which was declared successful by a military junta after seizing power from President Bazoum on Wednesday morning, has raised deep concerns among regional leaders about the violation of democratic principles in the ECOWAS area. In response to the unfolding events in Niger, the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, issued a press statement condemning the coup and expressing solidarity with the democratically elected government.
The ECOWAS statement stressed that any attempt to change political power through unconstitutional means is unacceptable and goes against the democratic values that the regional bloc upholds. President Mohamed Bazoum remains the legitimate and legal President of Niger, recognized by ECOWAS, and his continued detention by the coup plotters is a cause for grave concern.
“We vigorously reject this published Communiqué and condemn this coup, which is in total violation of the democratic principles that underpin the management of political power in the ECOWAS area,” the ECOWAS Commission stated in its press release.
The regional bloc further emphasized that all those involved in the coup will be held responsible for the safety and security of President Bazoum, his family, members of the government, and the general public. The situation has prompted widespread condemnation and fears for the stability of the region.
ECOWAS, which has been at the forefront of promoting democracy and good governance in West Africa, is closely monitoring the developments in Niger and reiterates its commitment to the preservation of democratic norms.

As the crisis unfolds, regional leaders are actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to seek a peaceful resolution to the situation. The ECOWAS stance serves as a powerful message to those attempting to disrupt democracy that such actions will not be tolerated, and any unconstitutional seizure of power will face resolute opposition from the regional community.
The people of Niger, Africa, and the international community are closely watching the unfolding events in the country. It is essential that stability and constitutional order be restored promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of Niger’s citizens and to uphold the democratic principles enshrined in the constitution.
ECOWAS has called on all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and peaceful resolution to the crisis. The regional bloc remains committed to supporting Niger in its efforts to maintain peace, stability, and democratic governance.
In conclusion, ECOWAS’ demand for the immediate release of President Bazoum and the restoration of constitutional order in Niger reflects the commitment of the regional community to uphold democratic values and condemn any attempts to subvert democracy through unconstitutional means.
