EFCC Arrests Pastor Over Alleged N1.3 Billion Fake Grant Scam

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken action against the General Overseer of Faith on the Rock Ministry International, Apostle Theophilus Oloche Ebonyi, arresting him in connection with an alleged N1.3 billion fraud. The arrest is linked to accusations of utilizing fake grants from the Ford Foundation amounting to $1,319,040,274.31.

According to the EFCC statement, Ebonyi allegely engaged in fraudulent activities by advertising an intervention project through his NGO, Theobarth Global Foundation. He purportedly claimed that the Ford Foundation was offering a $20,000,000 grant to aid the less-privileged in society, urging individuals and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to subscribe as beneficiaries.

Each subscriber was allegedly required to pay N1,800,000 for registration forms and clusters, leading to Ebonyi amassing a significant sum of N1,391,040,274.31. EFCC investigations revealed that the Ford Foundation had no connection to Ebonyi or his NGO, explicitly disassociating itself from them. Additionally, the Commission has reportedly traced five properties acquired by the pastor through his alleged illicit dealings.

Despite Ebonyi’s denial of being arrested, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed his arrest in June 2023, stating that he has been released on bail. The Commission emphasizes that charges will be filed in court once investigations are completed.

The EFCC warns the public that Ebonyi is allegedly still active on social media platforms, attempting to promote the purported grant from the Ford Foundation. The Commission remains committed to ensuring accountability for those involved in fraudulent activities.
