EFCC Returns $180,300 and 53 Stolen Cars to Canada in Cybercrime Bust

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday handed over $180,300 and 53 vehicles, fraudulently obtained from Canadian citizens by Nigerian cybercriminals, to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). This handover demonstrates the EFCC’s commitment to fighting financial crime and highlights the importance of international collaboration in addressing the growing threat of cybercrime.

At the signing ceremony in Abuja, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to combating financial crimes and restoring stolen assets to victims. He emphasized that cybercrime is a global issue, with perpetrators frequently crossing borders to evade detection, making collaboration between countries essential in the fight against such crimes.

Olukoyede stated, “Today’s handover underscores our determination to track, recover, and return assets stolen from victims of cybercrime. Financial crimes are not confined to one nation; they span jurisdictions, and that is why working with partners like the RCMP is critical.”

The recovered assets were the result of joint operations between the EFCC and Canadian authorities over several years, showcasing the effectiveness of international cooperation in addressing financial crimes. The EFCC Chairman also reiterated that Nigeria should not be viewed as a hub for such crimes, emphasizing that the government does not tolerate financial misconduct and remains committed to prosecuting offenders while ensuring victims receive restitution.

The handover event not only marked a significant recovery but also reinforced Nigeria’s position as a committed partner in the global effort to tackle cybercrime.
