EFCC Secures 65 Convictions for Financial Fraud in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States

In a significant milestone, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully secured 65 court convictions of financial fraudsters across Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states from January to December 15. This announcement was made by Mr. Aliyu Yunusa, the Sokoto Zonal Commander, during an end-of-year get-together organized by the commission to commemorate its achievements.

Surpassing its initial target of 50 convictions, the EFCC attributed this success to the dedication of its staff, support from sister organizations, community-based groups, and individuals. Mr. Yunusa outlined some of the prevalent cases, including impersonation through the use of another person’s National Identification Number (NIM) as a proxy, receiving stolen funds, cloning Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards for third-party withdrawals, and defrauding individuals through false pretenses.

“The most important celebration is that we stopped various crimes, discovered numerous frauds, and recovered funds from fraudsters within the year,” stated Mr. Yunusa, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to combating financial crimes. The end-of-year gathering served as an occasion to boost morale among EFCC workers, highlighting achievements and acknowledging challenges, with a hopeful outlook for improvement in the coming year.

Despite their success, Mr. Yunusa pointed out the challenges faced by the zonal office, including manpower shortages and the need for specialized training in combating modern cybercrimes. Fraudsters continue to employ sophisticated methods to deceive individuals, making it imperative for EFCC staff to stay abreast of evolving tactics.
