In a significant development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is poised to apprehend the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar-Farouq. This move comes in the wake of her failure to honor an invitation from the anti-graft agency regarding a probe into a substantial financial scandal allegedly involving a N37.1 billion fraud during her tenure. The investigation is reportedly linked to a contractor named James Okwete.
Despite being scheduled to appear at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on January 3, 2024, Umar-Farouq did not show up, leaving investigators waiting for over eight hours. The EFCC had requested her presence for questioning in connection with the ongoing probe.
An EFCC investigator revealed that the interrogation team retired from work at 6 pm, confident that the former minister would not show up. A senior EFCC official disclosed that if she fails to voluntarily appear within the week, operatives might arrest her.
