Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has responded to the barrage of criticism he has faced on social media, asserting that he remains unfazed by the negative reactions. The ex-governor, who is known for his outspoken nature, took to his verified X.com account to express his indifference, stating that he does not “give a damn” about the interpretations or misinterpretations of his posts.
El-Rufai’s recent comments sparked widespread debate online, particularly after a post in which he criticized the growing culture of envy and hatred in Nigeria, using U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris as a reference. He suggested that Nigeria’s challenges stem from deteriorating leadership qualities and called for confronting the “virus of envy” to realize the country’s potential.

The former governor’s remarks drew sharp criticism from various quarters, including Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s aide, Banks Omishore, who questioned El-Rufai’s moral authority to speak against envy and hatred. Omishore pointed out El-Rufai’s past actions, particularly his alleged animosity towards former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
El-Rufai’s political career has faced significant hurdles since leaving office, including the Senate’s refusal to confirm his ministerial nomination in August 2023. Additionally, his successor, Governor Uba Sani, accused him of leaving behind a substantial debt burden of $587 million and N85 billion, along with 115 contractual liabilities.
In July 2024, the Kaduna State House of Assembly further accused El-Rufai of diverting public funds amounting to N423 billion during his tenure as governor, adding to the growing list of controversies surrounding his administration.
Despite the mounting challenges and criticisms, El-Rufai remains resolute, maintaining that he will continue to express his views regardless of public opinion. “Interpret, misinterpret, or reinterpret any posts by me or others as you wish. I frankly don’t give a damn,” he wrote. “What will be will be, in sha Allah.”
