Elon Musk’s Neuralink Gets FDA Approval for Brain Chip to Help Blind People See

Neuralink, the brain-computer interface startup co-founded by Elon Musk, has achieved a significant milestone with its experimental brain implant, Blindsight. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted the device “Breakthrough Device” designation, which accelerates its development and regulatory approval. Blindsight is designed to help restore vision in individuals suffering from complete or partial blindness, including those with damaged optic nerves.

Neuralink took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the approval and its ambitious goal of restoring sight. “We have received Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA for Blindsight. Join us in our quest to bring back sight to those who have lost it,” the company shared.

Elon Musk also expressed excitement on his X platform, highlighting the device’s groundbreaking potential to bring vision even to those who have been blind since birth. “Initially, the vision may be low-resolution, comparable to Atari graphics, but it has the potential to improve and even surpass natural sight, enabling users to perceive infrared, ultraviolet, or radar wavelengths,” Musk wrote.

The Blindsight device works by tapping into neural signals in the brain’s visual cortex, bypassing damaged or non-functional optic nerves. This could enable individuals with severe vision impairments to regain visual perception, provided their visual cortex is intact.

Beyond its work on Blindsight, Neuralink is also pioneering brain-computer interfaces aimed at helping paralyzed individuals control devices with their thoughts. The company is currently conducting clinical trials with participants who have spinal cord injuries, testing the effectiveness of its implants in improving quality of life.

Neuralink’s breakthrough comes as part of a broader push to revolutionize treatments for neurological disorders using cutting-edge technology. The FDA’s breakthrough designation signals that the Blindsight device could soon be an integral tool in restoring vision and transforming lives.
