In a significant step towards advancing Nigeria’s energy sector, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has marked a pivotal moment with the first grant signing ceremony under the World Bank-funded Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up (DARES) Project. Launched officially in 2024, the DARES Project is set to boost the country’s off-grid energy market by supporting renewable energy solutions such as mini-grids and solar projects. The initiative is designed to provide sustainable and affordable electricity to unserved and underserved communities, thus improving their living standards and enabling economic progress.
During the event, eight Renewable Energy Service Companies (RESCOs) signed grant agreements, including Privida Power Limited, which received funding for the deployment of solar mini-grids in Kogi State. These mini-grids will serve 11 communities, bringing electricity to over 11,000 new homes. The DARES Project aims to impact the lives of 17.5 million Nigerians by providing reliable power to those without grid access.

The project is part of the Nigeria Electrification Programme (NEP), which focuses on off-grid energy solutions to help bridge the country’s energy gap. The grant for Privida Power covers the deployment of 2.47 megawatts of solar mini-grids in communities like Abocho Ojogba, Emewe Efopa, and Icheu. Each plant will be customized to meet the specific energy needs of the local population, with capacities ranging from 61kW to 704kW per community.
This move is expected to drive significant social and economic benefits by offering dependable electricity, which will unlock opportunities for businesses, schools, healthcare facilities, and homes. The DARES Project is a major step towards providing millions of Nigerians with clean, renewable energy and enhancing their quality of life.
