Enugu: 50% of Pupils Can't Read, says SSG

In a concerning revelation, the Secretary the Government (SSG) of Enugu State, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed that a staggering 50% of primary school pupils in the state face significant challenges in basic education. The revelation emerged from the Baseline Assessment conducted in November 2023, indicating a critical shortfall in reading and basic math skills.

During a keynote address titled, “Smart Basic Education and the Future of Africa,” delivered at the quadrennial convention of the Old Boys Association of Union Secondary School in Awkunanaw, Prof. Onyia highlighted the severity of the issue. “Our findings were shocking. 50% of our children cannot read a single word in English, and those who can read struggle with comprehension. Additionally, half of our children cannot solve simple subtraction challenges,” he stated.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, the state official revealed that the administration of Governor Peter Mbah is actively working to reform the education system in Enugu. Initiatives include integrating innovative technologies at the basic education level, with the goal of driving industrial growth and meeting global demands.

Governor Mbah affirmed this commitment by announcing that 30% of the state’s 2024 budget will be allocated to the educational sector. He expressed determination to ensure that even the poorest child in the remotest parts of the state receives quality education.

This revelation in Enugu highlights a broader concern, suggesting challenges that may extend beyond the state’s borders. The proactive approach to education reform underscores the urgency to address this issue on a national scale.
