Enugu: 50% of Pupils Can't Read, says SSG

In a concerning revelation, the Secretary the Government (SSG) of Enugu State, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed that a staggering 50% of primary school pupils in the state face significant challenges in basic education. The revelation emerged from the Baseline Assessment conducted in November 2023, indicating a critical shortfall in reading and basic math skills.

During a keynote address titled, “Smart Basic Education and the Future of Africa,” delivered at the quadrennial convention of the Old Boys Association of Union Secondary School in Awkunanaw, Prof. Onyia highlighted the severity of the issue. “Our findings were shocking. 50% of our children cannot read a single word in English, and those who can read struggle with comprehension. Additionally, half of our children cannot solve simple subtraction challenges,” he stated.
