Professor Akanni Akinyemi of Obafemi Awolowo University emphasized the urgency of addressing the root causes of unsafe abortions to prevent needless loss of lives among young girls and women.

Professor Akinyemi emphasized the pivotal role of education and community engagement in promoting safer reproductive health practices. He urged for open dialogue and supportive interventions within communities, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility beyond government intervention.

Echoing similar sentiments, Adeola Awakan, the Oyo State Family Planning Coordinator, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring accessible family planning services for all. She stressed the significance of empowering individuals with the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.

Contributing to the discussion, Professor Ademola Ajuwon of the University of Ibadan highlighted the persistent challenges posed by unintended pregnancies in Nigeria. Despite strides in education and access to contraception, the rate of unintended pregnancies remains stagnant, underscoring the need for comprehensive strategies to tackle underlying causes.

The consensus among experts is resolute: combating unsafe abortions demands a multi-faceted approach involving education, community engagement, and policy advocacy. By uniting across sectors, stakeholders can effectively safeguard the reproductive health and rights of women and girls in Nigeria.
