Early Reports and Impact
The explosion happened in the middle of the day, when students were likely going about their routine activities at the school. A source close to the incident, who spoke under anonymity, explained that the student who died was in possession of a substance believed to be an IED. The device reportedly detonated, causing the student’s death and injuring other students in the vicinity. The explosion’s force caused significant panic, and people in the area quickly rushed to the scene to help.
Authorities Confirm Casualties
John Gabaya, the Chairman of Bwari Area Council, confirmed the tragic news in a phone conversation. He disclosed that one person had been confirmed dead, while three others sustained injuries, including a local vendor who was selling snacks in the area at the time of the explosion.
Gabaya’s account shed more light on the situation: “At the scene there, one person died. That one was confirmed dead. The three other persons were rushed to the hospital. There were four; then there was one other girl who was selling awara (local snack),” he explained, adding that the explosion also wounded the girl selling the popular local snack known as awara.
Investigation and Response
Authorities have swiftly begun investigating the incident. Gabaya mentioned that he had ordered the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to interrogate a certain Mallam who had recently brought children from Katsina to the school. The connection between the Mallam and the explosion is being investigated, as some of the children under his care were reportedly affected by the blast.
The local police, under the guidance of the DPO, have questioned the Mallam to gain further insight into the events leading up to the explosion. The authorities are looking into all angles, including the possibility that the explosion may have been an act of sabotage or an accident involving dangerous substances.
Emergency Response and Ongoing Efforts
In response to the explosion, the FCT Emergency Management Department immediately deployed Search and Rescue teams to assess the scene and provide necessary aid. Nkechi Isa, the Head of Public Affairs for the department, confirmed the team’s presence, indicating that the authorities were taking immediate steps to provide relief and gather further information on the cause of the explosion.
The explosion’s impact on the community has been devastating, and the investigation continues as officials work to uncover the truth behind this deadly incident.
Conclusion
As the investigation unfolds, the community in Kuchibuyi and the larger Bwari Area Council remain in shock. The tragic explosion has raised several questions about safety measures and the potential presence of dangerous materials in areas where children gather.
