The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a stern warning regarding the increasing presence of substandard and unregistered sugar products in Nigerian markets. These products, predominantly smuggled from Brazil, pose serious health risks while destabilizing the local sugar industry.
In a statement released on Wednesday, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, revealed alarming findings. Several imported brands, including Grupo Moreno, Terous, USI S.Joao, Alvean, and Arapora Bionergia, have failed to meet Nigerian health and safety regulations. These products lack the mandatory Vitamin A fortification essential for consumer well-being, exposing the population to significant health risks, including blindness and heightened susceptibility to infections.

Investigations by the FCCPC in key regions such as the South-West and North-East uncovered disturbing trends. Many of the smuggled sugar products are unlabelled, missing crucial details like production and expiry dates, batch numbers, and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) registration numbers. This absence of vital information suggests the products have not undergone safety testing, rendering them unsafe for consumption.

Vitamin A deficiency, a direct consequence of consuming these substandard products, disproportionately affects vulnerable groups like children and pregnant women. According to health experts, such deficiencies can lead to severe health issues, including impaired vision, weakened immunity, and increased risk of mortality.

The impact of these substandard products goes beyond health concerns. Smuggling operations, often facilitated through porous borders with neighboring countries like Cameroon and Benin Republic, disrupt Nigeria’s local sugar industry. “This practice not only endangers consumer health but also undermines the integrity of the local sugar industry and distorts market prices,” stated Ijagwu.
