FG and Governors Agree to Create State Police

In response to mounting security challenges across Nigeria, the Federal Government and state governors are exploring the possibility of establishing state police forces. The decision emerged from discussions held between President Bola Tinubu and governors from various states at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, revealed that while the idea is still in its preliminary stages, both levels of government acknowledge the urgent need for such a measure. He emphasized that extensive deliberations and consultations among stakeholders are essential before any concrete steps are taken.

Idris highlighted the significance of this potential shift in the nation’s security architecture. He explained that the consensus on establishing state police reflects a growing recognition of the unique security needs and challenges faced by different regions within Nigeria.

The minister emphasized that while there is a shared agreement on the necessity of state police, there is still much groundwork to be covered. He stressed the importance of subsequent meetings between the Federal Government and state authorities to delineate the modalities and implementation strategies for the proposed state police forces.
