In a significant move towards advancing research and development in Nigeria, the Federal Government has greenlit a substantial N5.1 billion grant for 185 groundbreaking research projects under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF) 2023 Grant Cycle. The approved funding, aimed at fostering economic and technological development, comes as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to bolstering innovation and progress in the nation.
The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced the approval, which follows a meticulous screening process conducted by the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee (NRFS&MC). Commencing in March 2023, the screening involved the evaluation of 4,287 concept notes submitted by prospective applicants.
The breakdown of the grant reveals a strategic allocation of funds: N3,784,635,923.00 for Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation (SETI); N759,875,400.00 for Humanities and Social Science (HSS); and N583,669,300.63 for Cross-Cutting (CC) thematic areas. Individual grants, ranging from N8 million to over N46 million, underscore the diverse and impactful nature of the selected research proposals.
Projects under SETI include revolutionary initiatives like the development of an Intelligent Multichamber Evaporative Cooling Preservative System for Post-Harvest Storage of Selected Fruits and the creation of an Electric Vehicle with Special Tracking Features. Meanwhile, the Cross-Cutting thematic group encompasses research endeavors such as utilizing Scrap Tires and Plastic Wastes for Renewable Energy Storage and developing an Economical Low Voltage Programmable Electroporator for potential wound healing and cancer treatment applications.
Humanities and Social Science projects span areas critical to societal well-being, including Digital Financial Inclusion, Rural Households’ Consumption Structure and Well-being in Nigeria, and Mitigating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among Frontline Nigerian Army Personnel using Stress Inoculation Therapy.
The TETFund National Research Fund (NRF) Grant, initiated to encourage cutting-edge research aligned with societal needs, aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda. This agenda views research as a vital tool for economic growth and elevating the standards of living for the Nigerian people. The approved grants signify a commitment to fostering innovation, driving progress, and addressing crucial societal challenges.
