In a groundbreaking move to combat poverty and hunger, the Federal Government of Nigeria is set to launch “Humanitarian Hub Packages” in all 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) nationwide. The announcement comes as the World Food Programme (WFP) commits a staggering $2.5 billion to alleviate hunger within Nigeria over the next five years.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, revealed this ambitious plan during a meeting with a delegation from the World Food Programme in Abuja. Dr. Edu emphasized the urgency of addressing the dire poverty affecting over 133 million Nigerians, and the humanitarian hubs are envisioned to expedite the distribution of aid to those in dire need under the “Zero Hunger” initiative.
“This is a crucial step forward in our efforts to combat poverty and respond to humanitarian crises,” stated Dr. Edu. “The humanitarian hubs will be established in every local government area, totaling 774 across Nigeria. These hubs will serve as vital centers for delivering assistance swiftly and effectively.”
The “Zero Hunger” initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, is part of the broader strategy to uplift vulnerable populations and reduce poverty rates. It aims to ensure that no Nigerian goes to bed hungry.
Country Director of WFP Nigeria, David Stevenson, expressed the organization’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s “Zero Hunger” program. Stevenson announced the allocation of $2.5 billion over the next five years to combat hunger in Nigeria, with 2.1 million Nigerians already identified as beneficiaries of this initiative. The collaboration between WFP and the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is expected to expand these efforts significantly.
“We are impressed by the minister’s leadership and the strategic vision of the ministry,” commented Stevenson. “The humanitarian hubs, the ‘Zero Hunger’ campaign, and the potential to source food locally while assisting with cash transfers and food distribution are all commendable efforts.”
The establishment of humanitarian hubs in every LGA is poised to revolutionize the delivery of aid, making it more efficient and accessible to those who need it most. With the commitment of the Federal Government and the support of international organizations like the World Food Programme, there is newfound hope for alleviating hunger and poverty in Nigeria.
