In a groundbreaking move to protect Nigeria’s digital future, the Federal Government has officially launched the Youth Data Protection Awareness and Training (YDPAT) program — a strategic initiative focused on empowering Nigerian youth with critical data privacy skills.
Held on July 25th, 2025, at the prestigious Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, this program is set to train, certify, and engage 5,000 Nigerian youths, preparing them for real-world roles in digital privacy, security, and compliance.
As Nigeria’s digital landscape rapidly evolves, data breaches, identity theft, phishing, and online scams are rising threats. The Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 was passed to combat these challenges, but most youths still remain unaware of their data rights — and even fewer are equipped with the skills to protect them.
That’s where YDPAT comes in.
Organized by the Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) in collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), this initiative targets the massive skills gap in the data space. Nigeria has over 500,000 data controllers, but only around 5,000 certified Data Protection Officers (DPOs).
