Federal Government Puts Nutrition First in Development Plans, Sees Progress with ANRiN Projects

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing malnutrition and food shortages by placing nutrition at the forefront of its budgeting and development strategies. This was emphasized by the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, during the 2023/24 Annual Results Conference of the Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN) Project held in Abuja.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Emeka Vitalis Obi, Senator Bagudu highlighted that the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning has integrated nutrition into its medium-term development plan (2021-2025) and the long-term agenda for 2050. These plans aim to shift the narrative surrounding Nigeria’s nutrition challenges and improve related health outcomes.

The Minister underscored the importance of sustainability in these efforts, ensuring that future administrations continue to prioritize nutrition within their development agendas. One of the significant strides made is the institutionalization of a nutrition budget tagging and tracking system, the creation of a National Nutrition Dashboard, and enhanced coordination of nutrition interventions at both national and sub-national levels.

“Prioritizing nutrition in our development agenda underscores our commitment to tackling malnutrition, stunting, and wasting in Nigeria,” Senator Bagudu stated. “We recognize that nutrition is not just a health issue, but a critical factor in economic growth, social equity, and human capital development. Our policies are designed to meet the diverse needs of our population.”

The Minister also highlighted the success of the ANRiN Project in various states, with notable achievements in Gombe through a multisectoral convergence pilot project. This initiative, which involved collaboration across Agriculture, Health, Social Welfare, Education, Women Affairs, and Planning sectors, along with the National Social Safety Nets Program, has led to improved nutrition uptake among the population.

The conference emphasized that while challenges remain, there is a significant opportunity to transform Nigeria’s food systems and health outcomes through informed policies and practices that prioritize nutrition.
