The Federal Polytechnic Ilaro in Ogun State has announced a groundbreaking development with the creation of an electric automated tricycle. This innovation, designed and assembled at the institution’s Innovation Centre, represents a major step forward in Nigeria’s automotive industry. Dr. Mukail Akinde, the Rector of the polytechnic, revealed plans to establish a mini assembly plant to produce these tricycles and is now seeking support from the Federal Government and corporate organizations.
Dr. Akinde emphasized the potential of this electric tricycle to reduce Nigeria’s dependency on imported vehicles, which could alleviate pressure on the nation’s foreign exchange reserves and create job opportunities for young Nigerians. The tricycle, still in its prototype stage, is designed to include a solar-powered charging panel and accommodate a rider along with two passengers.

The Rector has urged the Federal Government and manufacturing sector companies to invest in this project to help move it from prototype to full-scale production. The goal is to initially produce at least 10 tricycles, with hopes for further expansion.

Alhaji Garba Gashua, Chairman of the Polytechnic’s Governing Council, praised the project and the use of locally sourced materials, underscoring the need for further federal assistance to scale up production. The Director of Vehicle Electrification at the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Mr. Ayinde Abdullahi, also commended the initiative and pointed out that the development of local raw materials companies could further support the growth of Nigeria’s automotive industry.
