In a groundbreaking move towards enhancing accessibility and efficiency, the Federal Government is set to launch a dedicated app for the application process of the much-anticipated Student Loan Scheme. The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the Student Loan Scheme Board, Akintunde Sawyer, following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
The introduction of the app aims to streamline the application procedure, ensuring a seamless and technology-driven process with zero human intervention. This initiative is part of the government’s commitment to kickstart the student loan program later this year, as emphasized by President Tinubu during the National Economic Summit in 2023.
President Tinubu, commemorating Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12, fulfilled a campaign promise by signing the student loan bill into law. The bill, spearheaded by the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, now Chief of Staff to the President, establishes the Nigerian Education Loan Fund. This fund will provide interest-free loans to economically disadvantaged Nigerian students, facilitating easier access to higher education.

To enhance accessibility and transparency, the student loan funds will be managed by the Ministry of Education and will exclusively benefit indigent students enrolled in tertiary institutions.
