The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, has appointed a female professor as the new acting Vice Chancellor. This decision followed the removal of the former acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joe Ikechebelu, during a meeting held at the Council Chambers of the institution on Saturday.

The announcement was made through a letter from the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Ambassador Gregory Mbadiwe, which was shared with journalists in Awka. The letter detailed that the new acting Vice Chancellor’s appointment, which is for a period of six months, aligns with the provisions of Section 4 of the First Schedule of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004, as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act 2007.

Terms of Appointment

The new acting Vice Chancellor’s appointment is effective from Monday, July 22, 2024. The terms and conditions of the role are consistent with those approved by the Federal Government for all federal universities. Mbadiwe emphasized that the appointment would last no longer than six months. He also noted that a copy of the appointment letter has been sent to the Honourable Minister of Education for the information of the Visitor to the University.

Official Statement

In his statement, Mbadiwe called on the university community to extend their congratulations and full support to the new acting Vice Chancellor as she assumes her new role. “Together, we will write the next chapter in the illustrious history of Nnamdi Azikiwe University,” he added.

The letter read: “Dear Professor, Appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University. I am pleased to inform you that in accordance with the provisions of Section 4 of the First Schedule, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Act CAP 139, LFN 2004, as amended by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act 2007, the Governing Council has approved your appointment as Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on the recommendation of the University Senate.

“Your appointment is for a period not later than six (6) months, effective Monday, July 22, 2024. The terms and conditions of your appointment are as approved by the Federal Government for all Federal Universities.

“On behalf of the Governing Council, I extend our warmest congratulations on your appointment. We have full confidence in your ability to lead our esteemed institution during this period and wish you great success in this role.

“Please note that a copy of this letter is being forwarded to the Honourable Minister of Education for the information of the Visitor to the University. Once again, congratulations on your appointment.”
