In a landmark move aimed at fostering inclusivity and economic empowerment, the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Bank of Industry (BOI), has announced a revolutionary initiative set to transform the lives of millions of persons living with disabilities across Nigeria. The announcement, made by Dr. Betty Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, marks a significant step towards creating opportunities and reducing barriers for this segment of the population.
Under this pioneering program, low-interest loans of up to N1 billion will be extended to individuals with disabilities, providing them with the means to enhance their businesses and contribute to job creation. Dr. Edu emphasized that the government’s focus is on equipping beneficiaries with essential skills through training in business development and registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission. The aim is clear – empower individuals to be self-sufficient contributors to society.
“We want to teach you how to fish, we are no more giving you fish; we want to empower you to be useful to yourself and the society and remain good ambassadors of this nation,” asserted Minister Edu.
As part of the comprehensive empowerment initiative, the minister presented Point of Sale (POS) machines and N100,000 operational capital to recipients. Additionally, a substantial scholarship fund of N130,000 has been earmarked for persons living with disabilities pursuing tertiary education. The Association of Persons Living with Disabilities in Nigeria is set to receive an annual grant of N20 million, further underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting and uplifting this community.
One of the notable features of this program is the Federal Government’s approval of a ten per cent inclusion for persons with disabilities in all interventions and schemes of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. This demonstrates a strategic effort to ensure that no one is left behind in the nation’s development trajectory.
In aligning with President’s vision, the empowerment program not only seeks to assist individuals in taking charge of their lives and pursuing their dreams but also actively contributes to the overarching progress of the nation. The far-reaching impact of this initiative resonates with the government’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
