FG Announces Phase Two of TVET Training, Creating Opportunities for 30,000 Youth

The Nigerian government is set to expand opportunities for young people through the second phase of the IDEAS-TVET program, which aims to train 30,000 youths across the country.

This new phase officially begins on August 25 and will cover 36 different skill areas. The initiative is coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education with support from the World Bank under the IDEAS project. It builds on the success of the first phase launched in 2022, designed to transform technical and vocational education in Nigeria.

Speaking at a workshop in Abuja, Blessing Ogwu, National Project Coordinator of the IDEAS Project, said the program is structured to provide high-quality, industry-relevant training in collaboration with private sector partners. The $200 million World Bank loan backing the project has already seen $130 million disbursed to support its activities.

Dr. Mistura Rufai, Co-Task Team Leader from the World Bank, explained that the training will last six months and participants will graduate with certifications under Nigeria’s National Skills Certification Framework, giving them recognised qualifications for the job market.

The project’s technical assistant, Ndem Ndiyo, highlighted that 97 Training Service Providers (TSPs) have been engaged. Each provider will handle between 100 and 300 trainees depending on their capacity, ensuring hands-on learning across all participating centers.

Overall, the IDEAS-TVET program is expected to bridge the gap between skills and employment, enhance youth employability, and contribute to Nigeria’s economic growth
