FG Bans Eedris Abdulkareem’s Anti-Tinubu Song “Tell Your Papa” Over Economic Criticism

The Nigerian government, through the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has officially prohibited radio and television stations from airing “Tell Your Papa”—a protest song by veteran musician Eedris Abdulkareem, which critiques President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.

The directive, issued on April 10, 2025, cites a breach of Section 3.1.8 of the NBC Code, which restricts content considered “indecent” or likely to incite public unrest. The ban has intensified discussions about freedom of expression under the Tinubu administration.

Why Was the Song Banned?

The track, which blends Yoruba, English, and Pidgin, directly challenges claims by Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, that his father is Nigeria’s greatest leader. Key lyrics highlight:
✔ Economic hardship – Rising inflation (33.2% as of March 2025) and food costs.
✔ Failed promises – Unmet pledges on fuel subsidies and power supply.
✔ Insecurity – Persistent violence from armed groups.

The NBC’s memo stated:
“The song’s provocative content undermines national unity and violates broadcast ethics.”

Abdulkareem, known for his politically charged music, dismissed the ban as “oppressive”, urging Nigerians to stream the song online. On Instagram, he wrote:
“When truth is forbidden, tyranny thrives. Download #TellYourPapa—they can’t silence us!”

Amnesty International Nigeria responded:
“This is an unjustified clampdown on artistic expression. The FG must uphold constitutional rights, not suppress criticism.”
