The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially commenced the training of one million Nigerian youths under the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, a national initiative designed to equip young people with relevant technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial skills.
The programme, which is managed by the Federal Ministry of Education, aims to provide practical skill sets that will reduce unemployment and promote self-reliance among Nigerian youths.
According to the ministry, over 250,000 participants are currently enrolled in the first phase of the programme, undergoing hands-on training across more than 2,600 accredited centres in different parts of the country.
Each beneficiary of the TVET initiative receives a monthly stipend of ₦22,500, consisting of ₦17,500 as upkeep allowance and ₦5,000 as transport support. In addition, the Federal Government provides ₦45,000 per trainee directly to training centres to ensure effective instruction and materials supply.
Over 1.3 million applications were submitted during the registration period, with about 960,000 youths verified through their National Identification Number (NIN) and Bank Verification Number (BVN) to maintain transparency and accountability throughout the process.
The programme covers 28 high-demand skill areas including tailoring, plumbing, ICT, GSM repair, livestock management, solar energy installation, electrical work, and crop production. The training model is designed to be 90% practical and 10% theoretical, giving trainees real-world experience to prepare them for business or employment.
Upon completion, every participant will receive a starter pack relevant to their area of training, enabling them to immediately start small-scale enterprises. The Federal Government has also partnered with the Bank of Industry (BOI) to provide single-digit loans for graduates who wish to expand their operations after training.
Speaking about the initiative, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (CON), described the TVET programme as a cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at developing a skilled workforce capable of driving Nigeria’s industrial and economic growth.
He added that the government has secured sustainable funding for the programme through incremental financing and strategic partnerships to ensure continuity and expansion beyond the current phase.
