FG Launches Free IDEAS Skills Programme for 26,000 Youths

The Federal Government has begun free skills training for 26,000 young Nigerians under the Innovation Development and Effectiveness in the Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) programme — a nationwide effort aimed at improving employability and supporting economic growth.

At a time when many graduates and school leavers are struggling to secure meaningful work, this initiative focuses on something practical: hands-on skills that match real industry needs.

What the IDEAS Programme Is About

The IDEAS project is domiciled in the Federal Ministry of Education and funded by the Federal Government in partnership with the World Bank. It is designed to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across Nigeria.

The 26,000 beneficiaries currently in training represent the third cohort of the programme. About 8,000 youths participated in the first two phases last year, showing that the initiative is being implemented in stages rather than as a one-time event.

The goal is simple: equip young people with practical, job-ready skills and reduce unemployment by connecting training directly to industry demand.

Training That Goes Beyond the Classroom

One of the training centres visited during the programme inspection was Wavecrest College of Hospitality in Lagos. At the institution, beneficiaries undergo three months of hands-on instruction followed by three months of internship placement within the industry.

That internship component is important. Many training programmes end at theory. This one includes real workplace exposure, giving participants a chance to apply what they learn in live environments.

According to programme coordinators, the training is completely free. Beneficiaries are also expected to receive starter packs after completion and gain access to soft loans through the Bank of Industry to help them start small businesses or expand existing ventures.

Why This Matters Now

Youth unemployment remains one of Nigeria’s biggest economic challenges. While university degrees remain valuable, employers increasingly demand practical competence — skills that allow young people to contribute immediately.

By focusing on technical and vocational training, the IDEAS programme aims to close the gap between education and employment. Instead of producing job seekers alone, the programme hopes to produce skilled workers and small business owners.

Support from the World Bank also signals international confidence in the structure and oversight of the initiative.

The Bigger Test

The success of this programme will not only be measured by the number of participants trained, but by outcomes — how many secure jobs, how many build sustainable businesses, and how many remain economically active months after graduation.

If well monitored and consistently funded, IDEAS could become a strong model for vocational development nationwide.

For now, it represents a serious effort to move beyond promises and invest directly in the skills of young Nigerians — a step that could make a lasting difference if properly sustained.
