In a significant move to address the escalating issue of fake degrees, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Ministry of Education, is set to inaugurate a committee today. The committee’s primary objective is to tackle the pervasive problem of degree mills and ensure the authenticity of academic qualifications.
The announcement was made by Ben Goong, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry of Education. According to the notice, Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman will lead the inauguration of this inter-ministerial committee later this afternoon.

The urgency of this action comes in the aftermath of an investigative report by Umar Audu, a journalist with the Daily Nigerian newspaper. Audu exposed the illicit activities of degree mills in Benin Republic and Togo, revealing how he acquired a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication within a remarkably short period.
As a consequence of this report, the Nigerian government imposed a ban on the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo. The National Universities Commission disclosed that 18 out of the 58 universities suspended in Nigeria were foreign-owned, underscoring the need for a comprehensive strategy to curb the proliferation of fake degrees.

The committee’s mandate is to conduct a thorough investigation into the operations of degree mills and develop effective strategies to combat their activities. With over 10,900 Nigerian students studying in Beninois and Togolese universities expected to be impacted by the government ban, the committee’s work is critical to safeguarding the credibility of educational qualifications.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Education has expressed its commitment to extending the scrutiny to institutions in other African countries, including Ghana, to ensure a comprehensive approach to addressing the issue at its roots.
