FG Introduces Stricter Requirements for NIN Date of Birth Changes

In a recent announcement, the Federal Government of Nigeria has implemented additional requirements for individuals seeking to change their date of birth on the National Identification Number (NIN) database. Effective immediately, applicants must now furnish an electronic civil registration and vital statistics system, e-CRVS certificate from the National Population Commission (NPC).

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) revealed these new guidelines for date of birth changes through its official channels. Alongside the e-CRVS certificate, applicants are also mandated to submit copies of other valid documents, including identification and an application letter for modification, addressed to the Commission’s Director General.

Previously, the process required only an affidavit and a payment of N15,000 for age modifications and other changes in the NIN system. However, under the updated guidelines, date of birth modifications can now only be made once in a lifetime, and the process is exclusively conducted at NIMC enrolment centers.

It is essential to note that licensed agents of the NIMC are explicitly prohibited from making any modifications, emphasizing the need for individuals to visit designated enrollment centers for such changes.

This development comes in the wake of a recent announcement by Nigerian telecommunications operators, setting February 28, 2024, as the deadline for disconnecting Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) that are not linked to the National Identity Number (NIN). The synchronization of SIM cards with NIN has been an ongoing initiative to enhance security measures and streamline identity verification processes.

Stay informed and compliant with these regulatory changes to ensure a seamless experience in managing your National Identification Number.
