The Federal Government, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has launched a major initiative to empower Nigerians living abroad and boost their contribution to national development. The program includes the Connected Diaspora x DOWA Startup Challenge and the upcoming Connected Diaspora Flagship Event 2025, both designed to harness the talent, creativity, and entrepreneurial energy of Nigerians around the world.

The Connected Diaspora x DOWA Startup Challenge carries the theme “Building, Breaking and Believing in Nigeria.” It aims to inspire young innovators in the diaspora, promote knowledge transfer, and support enterprise development and investment in Nigeria. Participants with exceptional ideas and impactful ventures stand a chance to win cash prizes of up to ₦1,000,000. NiDCOM emphasized that the challenge highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to recognising Nigerians abroad as important partners in national growth and economic transformation. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their entries before the deadline on December 7, 2025.

To apply, visit the official NiDCOM portal at www.nidcom.gov.ng/startupchallenge. Create an account, fill out your personal and business details, describe your innovative idea, and submit any supporting documents. Once your application is complete, you will receive a confirmation email. Applicants should ensure all information is accurate and submitted before the closing date.

In addition to the startup challenge, NiDCOM will hold the Connected Diaspora Flagship Event on December 19, 2025, in Lagos. The event will bring together policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders to discuss opportunities for collaboration and development. The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, will attend as the Special Guest of Honour and highlight the importance of partnership between the government and diaspora in accelerating national development. Leonard Stanley Ekeh, Chairman of Zinox Group, will deliver the keynote address, sharing his experience and insights to inspire young innovators. Other speakers from both the diaspora community and Nigeria’s local entrepreneurship ecosystem will also participate in discussions aimed at shaping meaningful engagement and future pathways.

The event will feature a Diaspora Talent Career and Internship Fair to connect returning Nigerians with internship opportunities provided by DOWA partner organisations. This initiative seeks to strengthen talent exchange, provide practical opportunities for young Nigerians, and contribute to national progress. NiDCOM expressed appreciation to its partners for their support, noting that their contributions are key to maximising the potential of the Nigerian diaspora. Stakeholders in both the public and private sectors are encouraged to take part in these initiatives and explore opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and nation building.

Young Nigerians and diaspora returnees are urged to take part in the Connected Diaspora x DOWA Startup Challenge and apply before December 7, 2025, to showcase their ideas and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
