FG Opens Portal for N50m Student Venture Capital Grant for Students

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially opened the application portal for the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), a new program designed to support student innovators with equity-free grants of up to N50 million. The initiative is part of the government’s Next Moonshot vision, which aims to discover and support breakthrough ideas from students across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

A Major Boost for Student Innovators

The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Education, which described the scheme as a major move to empower young people building solutions in technology, science, engineering, mathematics, and medical innovation.

According to the Ministry, the S-VCG will help students turn their ideas into real businesses by providing:

  • Equity-free funding up to N50 million
  • Access to expert mentorship
  • Tools and resources for building market-ready products
  • A structured pathway from idea to commercial expansion

The program aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to strengthen Nigeria’s economy by investing in digital skills, innovation, and youth-driven entrepreneurship.

Govt: “We Are Looking for Nigeria’s Next Unicorns”

During the unveiling ceremony, the Minister of Education, Chief Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the government wants to identify breakthrough innovations that can grow into global-scale companies.

He noted that the President has challenged tertiary institutions to produce the “next Moonshot” — bold, high-impact projects capable of transforming Nigeria’s future.

“This is not just funding,” he explained. “It is a seed investment in young Nigerians who can create global solutions and build successful companies from their campuses.”

Google Joins as a Strategic Partner

A major highlight of the initiative is its strategic partnership with Google, designed to improve fairness, innovation, and global competitiveness.

Through this partnership:

  • The grant portal uses Google Gemini AI for transparent evaluation
  • Every applicant receives one-year free access to Google Gemini Pro
  • Students will access premium digital learning resources
  • Applicants gain tools to improve technical, entrepreneurial, and research skills

The Ministry stated that the collaboration will ensure students “start their innovation journey with world-class tools used by leading global startups.”

Portal Now Open for All Eligible Students

The S-VCG application portal is now open to all qualified Nigerian students in accredited universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Applicants are encouraged to submit projects that show:

  • Strong innovation
  • Clear market demand
  • Potential to scale
  • Ability to solve national or global problems
