The Federal Government proposes extending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme from one year to two years to boost youth employment and enhance skills development. This initiative aims to deepen the impact of national service, enabling corps members to contribute more meaningfully to the country’s development, particularly in rural communities.
The proposed extension includes an expansion of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, designed to equip corps members with practical skills for job creation and national growth. Additionally, the government plans to deploy graduate teachers to underserved rural areas, addressing critical manpower shortages in remote schools.
Efforts are also underway to digitize the verification process for foreign-trained graduates of Nigerian origin, aiming to curb certificate racketeering and ensure the authenticity of academic credentials. A comprehensive database will be created to track Nigerian students studying abroad, helping to eliminate fake graduates and promote transparency in the education sector.
The Minister of Education, Professor Olatunji Alausa, believes this extension will give corps members more opportunities to become job creators, meeting the country’s needs. The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has expressed support for the ministry’s reform efforts and called for the creation of a database to track Nigerian youths studying abroad.
