In a bid to address the pressing issue of food scarcity and safeguard the nation’s food security, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has unveiled a crucial criterion for the distribution of seized food items across the country. The Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Wale Adeniyi, officially launched the distribution at the Zone A Command of the Service in Lagos.
The CGC highlighted the disturbing trend of individuals, identified as saboteurs, illicitly moving substantial quantities of food items out of the country. This unauthorized export, comprising various essential commodities like rice, beans, maize, and others, has significantly strained the domestic food supply, intensifying existing challenges posed by insecurity and exchange rate issues.
“To address this, the NCS has remained responsive in carrying out its mandate to protect our borders from the inflow and outflow of restricted goods,” stated the CGC. The Service has received government approval to dispose of seized food items to vulnerable Nigerians at discounted rates of N10,000 per 25kg bag of rice.

To ensure the effectiveness of this initiative, the NCS has implemented stringent security measures, with officers closely monitoring the entire supply chain to prevent misuse or diversion of the food items. Eligibility criteria have been established to ensure that the items are distributed solely to those in genuine need.
In a bold move against profiteering and exploitation, the CGC emphasized that beneficiaries must not resell the distributed items. The NCS is urging Nigerians to report any incidents of misuse or unauthorized resale, reiterating its commitment to transparency and accountability in the distribution process.
This initiative not only aims to provide much-needed relief to those facing food insecurity but also underscores the government’s commitment to addressing economic challenges and ensuring food sufficiency internally before considering export. By incorporating the National Identity Number (NIN) as a requirement for food distribution, the government aims to streamline the process and enhance accountability.
