The minister said “Our youth corps members’ allowances have been increased from N19,000 to N33,000, which is even higher than the minimum wage,” And that is part of their well-being. As we speak, the NYSC, led by the DG, has sent a proposal to the president to improve their uniforms and increase their various allowances.
In addition to the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the NYSC, the minister explained that the committee would also make recommendations on reforms and improvements to the NYSC system. He noted that the terms of reference of the committee include the commissioning of the NYSC ICT Centre, calling for entries from corps members for logo and mascot to commemorate the anniversary, and harmonizing reports of committees on the review of NYSC policies.
The NYSC scheme, which was established in 1973, is a one-year mandatory service for graduates of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It is designed to promote unity and national integration by posting corps members to different parts of the country to serve in various capacities, including education, healthcare, and rural infrastructure development.
The proposed increment in the allowance of corps members is a welcome development, as it will go a long way in improving their welfare during their service year. It is hoped that the government will expedite action on the proposal and ensure that the welfare of corps members is given top priority.
