FG, States Begin Renewal of 17,000 Primary Healthcare Centres Across Nigeria

The federal and state governments have initiated a nationwide program to revive primary healthcare centres (PHCs), marking a transformative step for healthcare services at the grassroots level.

The program aims to address the long-standing challenges faced by Nigeria’s healthcare system, particularly at the primary level, where many facilities have been left under-resourced and ineffective. Prof. Ali Pate, the coordinating minister of Health and Social Welfare, recently announced during a sectoral briefing to commemorate President Bola Tinubu’s first year in office that the government had allocated N260 billion for this initiative. The funds are designated for the comprehensive revitalization and upgrading of 17,000 PHCs across the nation over the next three years.

The plan also includes making 8,300 PHCs fully functional, thereby addressing critical gaps in service delivery. The revitalization will leverage funding from the International Development Association (IDA) and the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

Prof. Pate emphasized the importance of judicious use of these resources, highlighting the federal government’s role in providing guidelines to assist states in implementation. This structured approach aims to ensure efficiency, transparency, and impact across the board.

State-Level Implementation

A nationwide investigation reveals that the program has commenced in several states, with varying levels of progress. For instance:

• Gombe State: The commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, confirmed the revitalization had begun, indicating a proactive start in the region.
• Other states are expected to follow suit, as the federal government continues to coordinate efforts and provide support to ensure the success of the initiative.
