In a significant stride towards poverty alleviation and social empowerment, the Federal Government of Nigeria is gearing up to launch a new cash transfer program targeting an impressive 15 million households across the nation by October. Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, unveiled this ambitious plan during an interview on AriseTv, where she discussed the Progress Report on Nigeria’s participation in the 78th United Nations General Assembly meeting.
The program’s objective is to place tangible financial resources directly into the hands of vulnerable households, enabling them to kickstart businesses and improve their overall quality of life. Dr. Betta Edu emphasized the imminent announcement of the expansion of the national safety net program, which will bring substantial benefits to millions of Nigerians.
One notable aspect of the Federal Government’s approach to this initiative is its commitment to collaborating with state governments and local communities to verify the national social register. This verification process is designed to ensure that those currently listed in the social register still qualify for the assistance provided.

Dr. Betta Edu elucidated on this partnership, stating, “We have initiated engagements with the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) to validate the national social register. Currently, there are 15.7 million households, equating to approximately 62 million individuals, in the national social register. We aim to confirm their eligibility for continued support, as approved by the President.”
To facilitate the successful execution of this ambitious program, the Federal Government plans to collaborate with various international partners and UN agencies. Among these partners are the World Food Program (WFP) and government security agencies, ensuring a multifaceted approach to addressing poverty and social challenges in Nigeria.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is set to unveil a comprehensive roadmap detailing the President’s approval of the national safety net program. This roadmap will encompass a wide range of initiatives, including the construction of shelters for displaced persons, homegrown school feeding programs, provision of startup capital, and loans for Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).
