Flood Alert: 13 States, 50 Communities Expect Heavy Rainfall and Flooding, Says NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a crucial flood alert, indicating that 13 states and 50 communities across Nigeria are at risk of experiencing heavy rainfall and potential flooding. This alert comes in response to forecasts from the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Central Hub and the Federal Ministry of Environment Abuja.

According to Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Territorial Coordinator for NEMA, the states in question include Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, Niger, Kwara, Zamfara, Bauchi, Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, and Jigawa. Several communities within these states are expected to be affected by these weather conditions.

In Kano State, communities such as Sumaila and Kunchi are on high alert, while in Kebbi State, Argungu is also at risk. Katsina State is likely to face potential flooding in Bindawa, Jibia, Kaita, and other areas.

Other areas on the watchlist comprise Kontagora and Mashegu in Niger State, Kosubosu in Kwara State, and Kaura Namoda and Shinkafi in Zamfara State. In Bauchi State, the communities of Bajoga, Darazo, Kirfi, Azare, Jama ‘are, Itas, and Misau are urged to exercise caution. Similarly, Taraba State is anticipating flooding in Bali, Donga, Lau, Serti, Mutum-Biyu, Yorro, and various other localities.

The flood alert extends to Borno State’s Briyel, Biu, Dikwa, and Kukawa, as well as Adamawa State’s Ganye, Mubi, Demsa, Jimeta, Mayo Belwa, Numan, Shelleng, and Song. Yobe State’s Dapchi, Gashua, Geidam, Kanamma, Machina, and Potiskum are also encouraged to take necessary precautions.

Furthermore, the alert includes Gombe State’s Nafada and Jigawa State’s Dutse, Gumel, Gwaram, and Miga communities.

Mr. Farinloye has emphasized the increasing water levels of Rivers Benue and Niger, and he advises residents of communities along these rivers, extending up to Bayelsa, to be vigilant and take precautionary measures in the coming days.

Residents in the affected regions are strongly urged to stay informed about weather updates, adhere to safety guidelines provided by local authorities, and proactively safeguard lives and property. NEMA’s alert serves as a vital reminder of the importance of preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
