In a devastating turn of events, torrential rains in Zaria, Kaduna State, have led to widespread flooding, destroying homes and washing away cemeteries in the Chikaji area of Sabon-Gari local government. The relentless downpour, which occurred on Monday, has displaced hundreds of residents and caused significant damage to properties, leaving many in dire need of assistance.

Dr. Usman Hayatu Mazadu, the Executive Secretary of the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), issued a strong warning to residents in flood-prone areas, urging them to relocate to safer grounds immediately. His appeal comes in the wake of the recent flood that has affected several communities in the Zaria and Sabon-Gari local government areas.

“We have identified all the affected individuals and properties and have temporarily relocated them to safer locations, providing them with food and other essential items. The governor has instructed that a detailed assessment be conducted to determine if some of these areas require permanent relocation, especially those situated on waterways or other flood-prone zones,” Dr. Mazadu stated.

The floodwaters not only destroyed homes but also desecrated parts of the Ojo Cemetery, leaving many graves exposed. The Village Head of Chikaji, Auwal Sani-Dambaba, confirmed that over 200 houses were severely impacted, and parts of the Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School were also damaged. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the incident, although many families have been displaced and are currently taking shelter in nearby areas.

The community has responded swiftly to the crisis. The Chief Imam of Chikaji Central Mosque, Malam Suleiman Liman, has called an emergency meeting of local leaders and wealthy individuals to discuss how best to assist those affected and address the immediate needs of the desecrated cemetery.

Among the victims is Ibrahim Ahmed, who recounted his harrowing experience as his two-bedroom flat collapsed due to the flooding. “I am grateful to God that the flooding occurred during the day. We were trying to evacuate water from the house when part of it collapsed. I was focused on protecting my children, so I couldn’t save any belongings,” he lamented. Ahmed, like many others, is appealing for urgent support from the government, well-to-do individuals, and other stakeholders to help rebuild his life.

Dr. Mazadu also emphasized the proactive measures taken by the state government to mitigate the impact of the floods. These include the desilting of drainages and conducting sensitization campaigns to educate residents on the dangers of remaining in flood-prone areas. Despite these efforts, many residents chose not to relocate, resulting in the extensive damage observed.

“The safety of our citizens is a top priority for the government, but residents must also take responsibility for their own lives and properties,” Dr. Mazadu stressed. He called for greater cooperation from the public to prevent such disasters in the future.

The situation remains critical, and the affected communities are in urgent need of support to recover from this disaster.
