Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to prioritize investigations into critical issues such as alleged budget padding and undisclosed subsidy payments, rather than focusing on trivial matters like the recent arrest of controversial social media personality Bobrisky. In an interview with Arise Television, Obi emphasized that tackling issues such as inflated contracts and financial discrepancies in government budgets should be the primary concern of anti-graft agencies.
Obi criticized the EFCC’s recent actions, including the arrest of Bobrisky and other celebrities for minor offenses such as the misuse of Naira notes. He argued that these incidents distract from more significant financial misconduct prevalent within government circles. The former governor of Anambra State highlighted concerns over the discrepancies in the 2024 budget, initially approved at N25 trillion by the National Assembly but later signed at N28.7 trillion by the President, as raised by Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

According to Obi, addressing issues such as undisclosed subsidy payments and inflated contracts is crucial for restoring public trust and ensuring fiscal responsibility in governance. He stressed that these activities have a far-reaching impact on the economy and should therefore be the focus of investigative efforts by agencies like the EFCC.
The call from Obi comes amid ongoing debates about fiscal transparency and accountability in Nigeria. Recent claims regarding discrepancies in fuel subsidy management under the administration of President Bola Tinubu have also fueled discussions about financial integrity within government operations. While these claims have been denied by the presidency, they underscore broader concerns over financial management and governance practices.
