Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has appointed former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, as the Chancellor of the newly established Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education in Kano. The appointment is part of the governor’s efforts to enhance the quality of education and promote academic excellence in the state.

Jega, a renowned scholar and professor of political science, is widely acclaimed for his role in the conduct of credible elections in Nigeria. He served as the Chairman of INEC from 2010 to 2015, and was responsible for the successful conduct of the 2011 and 2015 general elections, which were widely regarded as free, fair and credible.

As Chancellor of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, Jega will oversee the affairs of the institution and provide guidance and leadership to ensure that it achieves its objectives. He will also serve as an ambassador of the university, promoting its interests and values both within and outside the country.

The new university, which is located in Kumbotso, is expected to provide quality teacher education and produce well-trained graduates who will contribute to the development of the education sector in Nigeria. The appointment of Jega and other principal officers is aimed at ensuring that the institution is run by competent and experienced professionals who will uphold the highest standards of academic excellence.

Other appointments made by the Kano State Executive Council include the Provost of Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, and Vice Chancellor of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, as well as the Deputy Provosts, Registrar, Bursar, and Librarian of the institution. These appointments are for a period of four to five years, renewable for another term.

In his statement on the appointments, Malam Garba, the state commissioner for information and culture, emphasized the importance of education in the development of any society. He stated that the appointments were made after careful consideration of the qualifications and experience of the candidates, and expressed confidence that they would help to improve the quality of education in Kano State.
