Former Nigerian international footballer Sam Sodje has advocated for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to remove Finidi George from his position as head coach of the Super Eagles. Sodje’s plea follows disappointing performances by the national team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin, leaving fans disillusioned.
Since assuming the role of permanent head coach in May, Finidi George has faced criticism due to the Super Eagles’ poor standing in Group C, securing only three points from four games. This places the team in fifth position, jeopardizing their chances of progressing in the qualifiers.

In an interview with Brila FM, Sodje stressed the importance of results in evaluating coaches, noting George’s failure to meet expectations. “Our objective is World Cup qualification, and with our current trajectory, we’re falling short,” Sodje remarked. “This issue transcends Finidi George; it’s about the national team’s ambitions.”
While acknowledging the contentious nature of dismissing a coach, Sodje suggested it might be necessary for Nigeria’s footballing aspirations. “Considering the circumstances, removing him might be a necessary step towards securing our World Cup berth,” he asserted.
The call for Finidi George’s dismissal underscores mounting pressure on the NFF to address the team’s performance challenges promptly. The decision, if implemented, will have profound implications for Nigerian football as they strive to qualify for the prestigious World Cup tournament.
