In a significant development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared Bello Matawalle, the immediate past governor of Zamfara, wanted on charges of corruption during his tenure. A top security source revealed to Sunday Tribune that the EFCC, on Saturday, called upon the Department of State Services (DSS) to apprehend Matawalle “anywhere he is seen” within the country.
This move comes after Matawalle accused the now-suspended EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, of demanding a $2 million bribe from him, an allegation that was vehemently denied by the anti-graft agency. During a recent interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in Hausa, Matawalle criticized the EFCC for targeting governors while neglecting federal officials with substantial budgetary allocations.
However, the EFCC refuted Matawalle’s claims and revealed that it was investigating him for allegedly embezzling state funds amounting to N70 billion through the awarding of unexecuted contracts to his associates. It is alleged that funds were received for these contracts without any work being done.

A Sunday Tribune investigation unveiled that the former governor has likely gone into hiding out of fear of being apprehended by the anti-graft agency. When questioned about Matawalle’s whereabouts, a security official responded rhetorically, indicating the seriousness of the situation.
The declaration of Matawalle as wanted by the EFCC marks a significant development in the ongoing battle against corruption in Nigeria. With the EFCC seeking the assistance of the DSS to arrest the former governor, it is evident that authorities are determined to hold accountable those who are implicated in corruption scandals.
