In a generous display of support, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) alumni association recently awarded scholarships totaling N10.6 million to 108 students. This initiative, aimed at easing financial burdens for deserving students, is part of the annual scholarship program driven by the university’s alumni network.
According to a statement by the university’s Acting Public Relations Officer, Sunkanmi Olajide, the scholarships were presented on Saturday, November 9, 2024, with contributions from the university’s U.S. alumni branch, the Kind Heart Annual Scholarship, and the Olusina and Subuola Fasoyiro Annual Scholarship Awards.
Recognizing Alumni Contributions
At the scholarship ceremony held at the FUNAAB Alumni Centre, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Babatunde Kehinde—represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Professor Kola Adebayo—commended the alumni’s ongoing dedication to the university. “This scholarship support is another commendable step in the right direction. It is always laudable to give back to the community,” he remarked, encouraging recipients to excel academically and make the most of this opportunity.
A Deep Motivation to Give Back
Mr. Bolaji Gbadamosi, the association’s Global President, spoke on the alumni’s commitment to supporting students. “The alumni felt that, as a way of appreciating an institution that has contributed so much to what we have all become today, we thought we should do something to touch the lives of the students who are integral parts of the institution,” Gbadamosi said.
Reflecting on the financial struggles many of them faced, he emphasized the alumni’s wish to give students a chance to focus on their studies, enabling them to build a solid foundation for the future.
Gratitude from Beneficiaries
One of the scholarship recipients, Blessing Raymond, expressed appreciation on behalf of all beneficiaries, pledging to honor FUNAAB’s values and excel in their studies. “On behalf of the beneficiaries of this noble vision of the alumni association of our great university, we sincerely thank you… We shall reciprocate this kind gesture by focusing more on our studies and graduating with flying colours,” she said.
Strengthening the Culture of Giving Back
The ceremony also featured virtual appearances by notable alumni, including Mr. Bayo Okenla and Professor Subuola Fasoyiro, who shared words of encouragement with the students. In a related effort, Felix Owolabi, an alumnus and General Overseer of Faith Triumph Ministries International, awarded additional scholarships during the fourth edition of his annual scholarship program, further demonstrating the alumni’s commitment to the university.
Encouragement for Future Success
FUNAAB Bursar, Mr. Olukayode Osinuga, who made a personal donation of ₦250,000, advised recipients to use their education as a foundation for success, reminding them that the support they’ve received should inspire them to one day give back.
The FUNAAB alumni scholarships reflect a powerful commitment to ensuring that students can complete their education without financial obstacles. This support has not only relieved immediate financial pressures for many but has also created a lasting impact on the students’ lives. As more alumni contribute, FUNAAB continues its legacy of educational support, empowerment, and positive change.
