Garmin, a leader in the high-end smartwatch industry, has expressed no intention of entering the growing smart ring market. Speaking at the Garmin Health Summit 2024 in Prague, senior Garmin executives, including Joe Schrick, Vice President of Fitness, and Scott Burgett, Senior Director of Health Engineering, dismissed the potential of smart rings, despite their rising popularity with brands like Amazfit and Oura.
According to the Garmin management team, smart rings offer only one significant advantage—convenience. While smart rings provide an easier way to track activities, they suffer from several drawbacks compared to smartwatches. The limited space in a ring results in fewer sensors and inferior signal quality, leading to less reliable health data. Additionally, battery life in smartwatches far exceeds that of smart rings, with the latter typically needing a recharge within a week.
Garmin also pointed out that the profitability of smart rings is currently lower compared to high-end smartwatches. Given the superior functionality and market demand for smartwatches, Garmin sees no reason to divert its focus to smart rings in the foreseeable future.
